There are many reasons why awards in our industry continue to be important and relevant! Firstly, they bring together different corners of the industry, brands, agencies, media owners & technology, not least at the award ceremony itself, the submissions require detail of the entire process demonstrating how each area played its part. Newcomers can gain attention and build reputation, which can help them to thrive. We have seen businesses and individuals truly benefit from winning awards, particularly independent agencies and start ups, and despite some cynicism, it is accessible and open to all, not just large agencies and well-known brands!
As we all strive to create great work that delivers value and recognition for our clients, awards give the industry the space to reflect on the good and the great which can be incredibly useful if we can also understand in our businesses what didn’t go so well, and where it would be prudent to scale back (fads), or further educate ourselves (AI).
Finally, Awards can always go further to be more inclusive, i.e. have grants for new/ upcoming businesses to get involved. It would be good to see some more disruption in the awards, for instance newly added and changing categories, particularly around AI, sustainability and DE&I - the PMAs add new categories each year so I encourage you to take a look!
